Rumor Confirmed: A Califone Film Indeed

Unread postby Joshuamarie » Tue Apr 06, 2004 11:38 pm

Yes

There is a tour film in production.

The film crew have been on the road
with Califone for the first 20 shows
of the present European tour.
For those of you counting that means
Heidelberg (Show #1) thru
Berlin (Show #20)
plus there will be additional footage
from Hamburg (Show #25) last night
and London (Show #28) this coming Friday.

We will take seriously your responses
to what songs (yep, live versions recorded
from at least 4 sources each night, including
a DAT) you folks which to see / hear in the film.
They've been playing varying sets and we have
footage of at least 20 different songs so far.
Not to mention tons of versions of each.

The film crew will continue on with Califone for
the second half of the East Coast tour
and for much of the West Coast, Mid-west, Southwest
in June.

Plus there will be a bunch of other goodies garnered
from other footage from Chicago and elsewhere.
Though I can't promise any nudity...

The more you have to say about songs and such
the more this film will be yours as well.
The filmmakers check Pastrysharp.com pretty much,
well, daily.

Also if you were (or are to be) at a show (where we're filming),
feel free to drop a line and let us know which versions
of what songs you thought stood out.

If folks want to contribute more good live recordings,
concert photos, posters, other stuff--you will receive
hearty thanks in the credits (of course) and help
the film along immensely.

They closed with Electric Fence in Berlin (show #20)
and it was incredible--one of the best of the tour.

Thanks again,
josh

Wow! Thanks for the info!

Joshuamarie, if you want any CDs that are not MP3 and thus better sounding, just let me know and I'll mail them to you.

Also, I'd really like to see / hear "Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground" on the film. That would be really cool. So make 'em play it if they haven't already!

I humbly request that you include at least one of their improv-type performances where they play to a short film.

So, is it safe to assume that this will eventually be released on a DVD??

Humble Requests

Unread postby Joshuamarie » Wed Apr 07, 2004 9:57 am

There is complete footage from the Rovereto, Italy show
where Califone improvised (with OrSo and Cory Vialma their driver)
to the old print of Alice and Wonderland before a live audience.

Though it might not become Deceleration 3 (as they initially wondered)
the night was nothing short of miraculous.

And, yes, DVD release is being planned.
We are also thinking of doing live releases in select cities
(Showing the film and then Califone plays a live set after it).
This is a ways off, but Califone have been kind enough, not only to let us onto their tours and film, but to entertain ideas of doing a short tour
with the film once it's completed. However, nothing is confirmed.

Cities that have been mentioned in connection with the short film tour
have been: Chicago, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver and, yes, Juneau, Alaska.

Even if it were to happen, this is still at least a year off,
so hold your horses.

Thanks for your help!
Keep the suggestions coming
and we'll see you in London day after tomorrow
for Show #28 of the European tour.

Best,
Joshua Marie

hi you filmakers and hat wearers
i am the one with the red barret .. remember heidelberg and luzern...

i cannot comment on the shows i did not see but there were two great moments in luzern.. a.)when tim went into .. "you ain't going nowhere " and ben was already on his way to some assorted percussion item . then realizes where tim is going to .. smiles and returns to his drum kit...
and b:) that announcement before the 2 nd encore"oh thanx we are not used to people liking what we do.. so we don't know what to do in situations like this...
what a true statement... imagine a band expecting that plp like their music..
califone prefer to make music for themselves...

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'm not Califone. I do know if you ever come to SoLanCo, that's Southern Lancaster County (Pennsylvania) for you SoCallies, you will not find the right girl.

Another request:

I just watch "A Hard Day's Night" a couple of days ago (damn, I love the Beatles).

I request a scene in the Califone film based on the "Can't Buy Me Love" sequence in "A Hard Day's Night."

Tim, Ben, Jim, and Joe jumping around maniacally in a field while "2 Sisters" plays.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Why won't the group play "On the Steeple w/ the Shakes (Xmas Tigers)"?

I've recently heard "Pastry Sharp" live, but does the band still play any of the other songs of that first EP? "Silvermine Pictures" and "Dime Fangs" are two of the greatest songs ever. "Dock Boggs" and "Bottles and Bones (Shades and Sympathy)" would also be great for the DVD.

When Tim & Jim played the photo opening they went on for one more song as an encore. Tim asked if there was anything I wanted to hear but didn't, to which I very quickly asked if they still knew Dime Fangs and he told me they had never done that one live. And I would think most of the stuff from the first EP with the exception of Pastry Sharp has never been played live. I also don't think that Dock Boggs has been done live since the song is based around tape loops from live recordings.

tim and jim played silvermine pictures at a show in chicago a few months ago. tim was having equipment problems so there was a 5 min. all jim violin/noise solo in the middle of it. it was great.

i saw them play down eisenhower sun up w/mule a couple years ago, but pastry sharp seems to be the only song from that first ep that they play regularly.

They played Dock Boggs in Portland in 2000. It was documented and it was a damn good time.

I have the first 20 seconds of the song. The dude who was taping it ran out of tape at that point, bummer, but still very cool that he was taping. That said, it is a fucking rocking rendition.

I asked questions, and you guys provided answers. Thanks.

I saw what was probably one of the earlier Califone shows at the Double Door in 1998. Califone was opening for Seam, and seeing Tim on stage was my first notice of the band's existence. They opened with "On the Steeple w/ the Shakes (Xmas Tigers)."

I saw Tim play a solo set at Wicker Park's short-lived Roby's in -- I think -- 1999. It was strange, actually. The bar typically had terrible metal acts, but they had a benefit show also featuring Doug McCombs, Kelly Hogan, and others that I've apparently forgotten about. Tim's five- or six-song set included "Silvermine Pictures," but that's all I remember about it.
