Califone/Iron & Wine tour

Unread postby mike » Sun Apr 13, 2008 3:08 pm

It's that time of year again...when I'm envious of all the people in the other cities where Califone is performing... it's been six or seven years since the band has played in these parts. My wife and I were tempted to drive the 400 miles to Louisville to see a show from this tour, but then came to our senses.

So for those of you lucky enough to witness any of the current shows what's going on? We're four days into a fourteen day tour and not a peep around these parts. Are they playing new tunes? Is there much cross pollinating with Sam Beam? Is anyone taping?

Come on now...help a brother with some vicarious living.

06-12 Davenport, IA - Capitol Theater
06-13 St. Louis, MO - Pageant Theater
06-14 Manchester, TN - Bonnaroo

I caught the excellent Atlanta show last night. They opened with the fiddle tunes: Michigan Girls, followed by Fisherman's Wife. The rest of the set included Tayzee Nub, The Orchids, Mean Little Seed, The Eye You Lost in the Crusades, Horoscopic. Amputation. Honey., and Spider's House. H.A.H. has shortened considerably, losing that hazy middle section, but the pounding synchronized finale seemed more furious than before--my favorite part of the show.

There was some nice overlap between the bands: Sam Beam appeared behind the grand piano during Mean Little Seed. Ben's percussion throughout I&W's set was a distinct highlight. Jim Becker played guitar on I&W's Woman King and Wolves (I think).

A great show. Iron and Wine are far more interesting in the full-band format. Only wish Califone's set was longer. Go see them if you can!

andu: I second your "Please?"

I live in Ohio, and a Columbus show would be very nice. It seems like the shows in MI and KY are sold out. I really want to see Califone before they stop touring...

Sweet video man, Jim is lookin' mighty shaggy.

Also, I had tickets to go see them in VA last Wed and my professor scheduled a FEAKING TEST that night!!! Thus I could not get all the way down there is time. It was tragic.... :( :(

That is just... not FAIR. Feaking tests.
BTW I am decisively a moron, since I'll be in Florida that week. I almost want to cancel my planned vacation and head to Bonnaroo instead.
But not to see Iron and Wine. :P

Wow, Stepdaughter is one of my favorite songs. I've never seen them play it live.
Thanks, fella!

Yeah... the fiddle work that Jim adds to Stepdaughter live is really cool.

I managed to get a Califone show into my future! I convinced my girl to skip school with me and run to Chicago to catch their last posted performance. I know that it will be worth it, but we'll miss some lectures... we drive tomorrow, a mere 7 hours from home.

I saw them play Tuesday night. I also wish that they would have stayed on for a long set, but I got to hear my favorites, so no bitching here. Excellent.

They opened with Horoscopic, and also did (in no particular order) Spider's House, Pink & Sour, The Eye You Lost, Michigan Girls, Your Golden Ass, Fisherman's Wife. They jammed on The Eye You Lost, I never saw it coming.

Some Iron & Wine people played on some of tunes. During Iron & Wine's set, Mr. Massarella played on a lot of songs with them, and Mr. Rutili came out for one as well. I didn't stick around til the end though.

Thank you Califone! I had a great time.
