It's about time someone put together something like this! thank you unhip. Has there been any decisions about who will cover which songs?

..very exciting.

i don't know how that news came out in the open but apparently it did (i think through a will oldham message board or something like that). i have never posted any official list of contributors because the tribute is still in the making (it has been for more than a while actually...). so here comes the list of contributions i have already received which is the only one i feel confortable revealing. other names of artists involved will be revealed only when i'll be receiving their contribution (many have already picked the song to cover but i don't want to jinx anything...):

from "red red meat" (perishable 1992)

"nice round numbers" by MARK ROBINSON (unrest/air miami/flin flon/grenadine/teenbeat records founder...)

from "jimmywine majestic" (sub pop 1993)

"stained&lit" by THE FRUIT BATS w/ TRIANGLE
"lather" by SETTLEFISH feat. BRIAN DECK

from "bunny gets paid" (sub pop 1995)

"carpet of horses" by ORSO
"rosewood, wax, voltz + glitter" by JOHN PARISH (pj harvey) and OLIAS NIL (number one cup/the fire show)
"idiot son" by CHRIS ECKMAN (the walkabouts)
"oxtail" by MAYDAY (lullaby for the working class)
"variations on nadia's theme" by MIKE WATT (minutemen, firehose)

from "there's a star above the manager tonight" (sub pop 1997)

"sulfur" by CUT (italian band)
"quarter horses (b-slow)" by CALEXICO
"second hand sea" by REBECCA GATES (the spinanes)

+ red red meat medley by CHRIS LEO (diamond, the lapse, the van pelt, native nod)

mark lanegan has chosen "airstream driver", i think i can say he's gonna be on the tribute 99% while with the other names mentioned in the first post my (flaming) lips are sealed...
http://www.unhiprecords.com will be revamped very soon so keep an eye on that for updates. if someone wants to help me in getting in touch with billy corgan and eddie vedder (both red red meat fans but kinda hard to get ahold of) i'd be grateful of course. other suggestions are welcome but if all bands who have already chosen the song to perform will actually deliver it to me we would be close to 80 minutes and at risk of making it a double cd (when the original idea was to make it a single cd and double lp).

Thanks for the information. Have you asked Califone to contribute? It might be fun for them to go back and reinvent an old RRM song with the current configuration of Califone. Just a thought . . .

Sadly this doesn't seem to have been released yet. But while digging around from a link posted in the rare tracks thread I found this:

Parish/Nil (2002)
A collaboration with John Parish on Red Red Meat's "Rosewood, Wax, Voltz, and Glitter"- utilizing a drum loop from Resplendent - for an as-yet-unreleased Italian RRM tribute album. (Olias Nil: guitar, vocals; John Parish: guitar, keys, vocals; M. Resplendent: drum loop.)

Hopeful this project hasn't been shelved since it been three years since the post by unhip about the contributions already received. There are several in that list that I'm really curious to hear.

Yeah, I found that Rosewood cover also, to my surprise. I didn't realize the significance, but I thought it was very cool to stumble upon. Keep digging!

as i run into chris eckman once in a while i asked him about his contribution and he told he has not heard anything from the italian guy for some time

i then asked on the walkabouts yahoo group and the person behind unhip records ( obviously) answered .. telling it is still under construction that was in february this year 2008

On the subject of RRM covers, there is a version of quarter horses by Roommate:

I talked to Sam from Iron & Wine briefly before his show the other night - he recorded Rusted Water for the album. But, had no idea if the album as a whole will ever come out.

Giovanni: why not just put it out on itunes at this point?
